#NurChat to discuss Health Select Committees report "wholly inadequate" PREP for nurses 09/08/11 8pm 

Following the recent Health Select Committee’s report on the NMC, reporting the inadequacy of PREP requirements for UK nurses, it was felt this would be a great topic to get the #NurChat ball rolling.

PREP is a subject matter that affects all nurses; we all manage our requirements differently with some going above and beyond the requirements and some struggling to fulfil them. The knowledge that this report may lead to increased PREP requirements is something that is relevant to all nurses.

The chat will be exploring some of the findings and your reactions to the Select Committee report. We will be discussing  how important PREP is to nursing, how some of us meet and some struggle with the requirements and how we view the possible changes in PREP requirements.

Post Chat Summary:

The first Nurchat has taken place and we have had a fantastic response, the chat was all about PREP requirements and the Health Select Committee's report that the current standards are inadequate.

We had a wonderful selection of nurses including RN's, ITU, Prisons, Nurse Lecturers, Neurology, Agency, District, Mental Health (thank you all).
The general response was in agreement that standards were inadequate and the chat focussed on the quality of CPD and how this could be audited. There were some fantastic ideas on how to improve the quality and a mentoring scheme was very popular, though it was agreed that this may not work for all nurses. So far as auditing went there was some discussion on how the current system of developing a cumbersome portfolio was difficult. There was mention of an online “skills passport” that was developed by the department of health, which was easily auditable. Also there was an idea that a phone app would be a great way of creating a learning footprint and replacing portfolios. It was also discussed that we all have different needs and learn in different ways and what may work for one nurse may not work for the next nurse, which is a great thing about the current system as it allows us all to learn what we need to and in a way that is relevant to us.
